HMTA Music Festival

March 5

Description and Purpose: To provide students an opportunity for performance in a non-competitive setting. Constructive, written feedback is given to each performer.

Eligibility: Pre-K - 12th Grade, Adult Hobbyist

Registration Deadline: February meeting

Repertoire Requirement:

One, two or three selections with a maximum performance time:

Pre-school - 8th grade students, and late beginners: 5 min

High school students and Adult hobbyists: 7 min.

Each composition must be from a different category (except D):

A. Pre-Baroque or Baroque

B. Rococo

C. Classical

D. Sonatina or Sonata (each movement is one piece)

E. Romantic

F. Impressionistic

G. 20th - 21st Century “Classics” (e.g. Bartok, Poulenc)

H. Original jazz solo or teaching piece.

Event Rules:

1. All compositions are to be played in their entirety, as written.

2. All music must be memorized.

3. No simplified arrangements will be accepted.

4. An original score with all measures numbered must be provided for the judge. Photocopies that meet the requirements of Standing Rule #10 must be submitted to the Chair for approval prior to the event.

5. A composition from category H must be paired with a composition from another category.

Setting and Dress Code: Small audience; Semi-Formal

Awards: Certificate of Participation, and a critique of the performance. Additionally, performers who receive a rating of “Superior” or a score of “5- and above” will be eligible to participate in the All-Star Festival at the TMTA Convention.

Registration: Online registration is available for this event.

Fee: $20 per student (studying with an HMTA member)

Teacher Responsibility: See standing Rules #1 and #6.
