TMTA-SA Spring Theory Test

February 6 - February 7

Description and Purpose: This important test is a prerequisite to participation in many other activities and promotes the knowledge and functional use of music theory. Evaluation is via a standardized test (Levels I - XII).

Eligibility: 1st - 12th grade Student Affiliate Members

Event Rules and Information:

1. Students are required to arrive 30 minutes before the test begins. If they are more than 15 minutes late, they will not be allowed to take the test the same day. Students have 2 hrs (grades 1-6) or 2 ½ hrs (grades 7-12) to complete the test. Students grade 4 and up may leave as soon as they have completed the test.

2. Students need to know what level test they are taking.

3. On the test day, students should bring two pencils and an eraser.

4. No cell phones are allowed in the classrooms.

5. Student Affiliate members in grades 1 - 12 must enter the test level at their school grade except if it is the first time taking the test. In this case, a student may take one test than the school grade and still be eligible for participation in level lower other TMTA-SA events, passing grade pending.

6. Students may enter any test level below school grade for LOCAL GRADING ONLY. No medals are awarded.

7. Vocal or Instrumental Students may enter Level I if they have not taken the theory test before.

8. It normally takes two months to get graded tests back.

Contesting Grades: If a mistake is detected in the grading of a test, the teacher is to attach a note to the original test identifying the error. Send this to the Theory Coordinator by January 12 for the Fall testing period, and April 13 for the Spring testing period. No changes will be accepted or altered after these dates.

Awards:

1. Medal rankings: Bronze Medal (90 – 93), Silver Medal (94 – 97), and Gold Medal (98 – 101)

2. A certificate to all who earn a passing grade of 70 and above

3. Any student earning a medal in each grade level of a division (I-III, IV-VI, VII-IX, X-XII) will also earn a division award certificate.

4. Senior Awards: certificates, engraved plaques and cash awards are available to graduating seniors who have taken and passed the Theory Test throughout their years of music instruction.

Fee: $13 per student (studying with an HMTA member). Make check payable to HMTA.
