HMTA EVENTS (Local Only)

To participate in local events, teachers must attend a minimum of five (5) HMTA meetings that year.

Dorothy Kelly Scholarship Competition

This piano competition distinguishes outstanding performances of solo classical repertoire by students in their junior or senior year of high school and provides the winner with a monetary award and an opportunity to perform for HTMA.

Baroque Competition

Provides a platform for young musicians to learn about the importance and richness of a great historic era. Students perform in a small recital setting and receive feedback from experts in stylistic interpretation. Cash prizes are awarded for best performances.

Chamber Music & Piano Ensemble Contest

Encourages students to explore the realm of ensemble playing with their peers. Student ensembles compete within appropriate age categories. Medals and top monetary prizes are awarded.

Concerto Competition

Encourages high level performances by an instrumental or vocal soloist and orchestra. First place winners of the Junior Division (ages 4-13) and Senior Division (ages 14-17) perform with the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra. Three Youth Concerto Divisions allow for all students to participate at their particular level of musicianship and receive an evaluation.

Music Festival 

Provides an opportunity to perform solo repertoire from memory in a non-competitive setting. Students receive constructive critiques and a certificate. With a superior rating, students are eligible to participate in the TMTA Convention All-Star Festival. 

Musicales (fall and spring)

Offers a non-competitive performance experience in a recital setting.  Students receive a ribbon and a certificate of participation.

Piano Contest

Determines, through solo competitions, the most gifted young pianists from HMTA. Competitors (ages 6-18) vie for gold, silver, and bronze medals as decided by a panel of judges. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies are awarded to the best gold medalists in a Final Round.

HMTA/TMTA EVENTSFor the following events, Student Affiliate (SA) membership is required.

Convention Ensemble

Gives students (ages 6 – 18) a chance to perform in an exciting large concert of piano ensembles at the TMTA State Convention in June.

Creative Video Contest

Encourages creativity in promoting music through the medium of videography. Students make a video on a pre-determined musical topic and submit it to TMTA for evaluations and prizes.

Music Theory Test (fall and spring)

This important test is a prerequisite to participate in many other activities and promotes the knowledge and functional use of music theory. Evaluation is via a standardized test; practice tests are available at TMTA.org

Original Composition Contest

Promotes creativity in original composition. Students are encouraged to give form to their experience with melody, harmony, and rhythm as appropriate to their grade level. Compositions receiving a Superior or Excellent rating are eligible to enter the TMTA-SA Original Composition Contest, for a chance to have their work performed at the TMTA Convention.

Performance Contest

Designed to select students in 7th grade and above to represent HMTA at the district division of the TMTA Performance Contest, the premier event for students who wish to perform and compete at the highest level. Winners of the district division proceed to the state level competition at the TMTA Convention.

Publication Contest

Encourages students to express themselves through writing about music. An essay on a predetermined topic is submitted for evaluation. Winning essays are sent to the TMTA-SA Publication Contest for a chance at publication in the Texas Music Teacher Student Affiliate Newsletter and World of Music Syllabus.

World of Music

Promotes a working knowledge of music history. Evaluation is via a standardized test; practice tests are available at TMTA.org
